The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1995 offering B.Sc. Chemistry course. The Department was upgraded to a Post Graduate Department in the year 2013. The Department of Chemistry is one of the prestigious departments of Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College in terms of academic excellence. Students from both B.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Chemistry have secured ranks in the University examinations. The Department regularly conducts activities such as observance of National and International Days of importance such as World environmental day, National science day, Ozone Day celebrations etc. with the financial support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) to inculcate scientific values among students.
The Department is also keen in developing research culture among students by conducting National and International seminars. Post Graduate students are encouraged to do their project work in prestigious institutions such as BARC Mumbai, NIT Calicut, Universities (Department of Applied Chemistry, Cochin University, School of Chemical Science Mahatma Gandhi University), J. J Murphy Research Centre. Rubber Park and Amritha Vishwa Vidyapeetom Coimbatore. Alumni members of the Department are currently holding key posts in reputed organisations.
The Department has four laboratories (one for U.G. and three for P.G.) equipped with instruments such as UV Visible spectrometer, Muffle furnace, Magnetic stirrer, Ultrasonicator and a Departmental library with copious collection of reference text books.
